The Growing Solution To Water Pollution

Horizontal Flow
Horizontal flow systems introduce waste water through an inlet pipe at one end of the bed, which then slowly flows through the rhizosphere to the outlet at the other end of the bed.
Vertical Flow
A vertical flow system comprises a flat gravel bed, topped with sand and planted with Phragmites. Some systems have a network of pipes with downward pointing holes and surrounded by large stones allowing the effluent to seep into the pipe and drain out into the collection sump. Dosing of the bed is done intermittently allowing time for the waste water to percolate down through the rhizosphere. It is vital that a good even coverage over the whole bed is achieved for the efficient functioning of this type of system.

Hybrid System
There is a third type of system currently in use. This is a combination of the horizontal
flow and vertical flow systems. It is thought that by using the two systems consecutively
results can be impressive. The construction of the vertical flow beds should be
in front of the horizontal flow bed. This for reasons not clear currently. By doing
this the overall performance is enhanced as opposed to the reverse scenario.
Young Phragmites are given a start to life in a glasshouse environment. They are soon moved out to open standing grounds to grow and mature as plants.
